Analysis: Big chipmakers open their wallets to compete

Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing have spent heavily to stay ahead of their leading competitors, Samsung Electronics and GlobalFoundries, respectively, and that trend is likely to remain for some time, Andre Mouton writes. Gartner estimates that capital expenditures in the semiconductor industry are increasing by 7% to 10% each year, and annual capex budgets of $8 billion to $10 billion will be standard for the biggest chipmakers in the next three years.
