Leaders can better establish rapport with their team by avoiding superficial compliments. Instead, they should ask for their team's ideas and listen carefully without being judgmental, FBI veteran Robin Dreeke says. "The key is to first validate the idea in some way. If you quickly agree without exploring the idea with an open-ended question, then you have a greater chance of sounding patronizing and losing the trust and rapport with the team," he says.
