Firms may find that guaranteeing access to principal advisers is a mistake, and one that can inhibit a firm's growth by creating succession issues and making it difficult to retain advisers, Steve Wershing writes. "If clients look at their relationship with you or their access to you as one of the most valuable aspects of working with your firm," he writes, "how much value is left in the firm when you leave?"
