Swiss geothermal drilling gets off to shaky start

A $172 million geothermal energy project has likely triggered dozens of minor earthquakes near a city in eastern Switzerland. Swiss geothermal prospectors are forced to drill deep holes to reach useful thermal water resources, and engineers saw pressure levels in their drilling hole soar as underground gas seeped in, possibly triggering the quakes. The incident could lead to future projects being conducted farther from populated areas, officials said.
