Calif. study raises questions about readmission penalties

California safety-net hospitals had lower 30-day mortality rates, compared with other hospitals, but still were more likely to get readmission penalties, according to a study in Health Affairs. The study authors wrote that it is very difficult to predict readmissions and that more data is needed to determine if some readmissions actually might result in lower overall care costs.
