Samsung, Apple stand down in overseas patent battles

After years of court battles, Apple and Samsung say they are ready to raise the white flag in their overseas patent war. The decision, which was announced a week after Samsung reported lackluster second-quarter earnings due to pressure from Chinese rivals, signals a shift in legal strategy for the company, analysts say, and will significantly scale back a series of legal battles over smartphone patents that began with a lawsuit by Apple in 2011. "It appears that Samsung and Apple, the market leaders, made a strategic alliance as China's Xiaomi is emerging as a formidable rival," said Cho Chang-hoon, a professor at Sogang University.
