When recession strikes, companies instinctively impose austerity measures yet fail to set themselves up for the post-recovery phase. "Successful strategists promote upturn thinking even during the deepest downturns," says Asaf Farashuddin, a former corporate strategist for Cummins and Lucent. He recommends building longer-range thinking into restructuring processes and creating "upturn SWAT teams."
