Ex-military commander: Send in the business execs

When he was commander of British forces in southern Afghanistan, Brigadier Ed Butler saw that business could do what the military and NGOs couldn't: quickly establish enterprises to stabilize communities and get fighters into productive jobs. Now a civilian, he is helping international companies become directly involved in humanitarian projects and development in frontier areas. "Our teams will provide an unusual mix of entrepreneurial business minds, humanitarian conviction, development expertise, military planning and operational precision," he says.
