Pilots' union offers American Airlines plan to avert layoffs

American Airlines announced it would furlough 200 pilots this fall, but the pilots' union responded with a plan to avoid the layoffs. Pilots currently must fly 78 hours a month, but the Allied Pilots Association wants to decrease the requirement to 75 hours a month. American prefers raising the requirement to 82 hours a month, which would limit the number of pilots needed on the payroll.
