The search giant is preparing a major new social-media offering while simultaneously making investments that weaken Facebook's ties to some of its key strategic partners, such as Zynga. The social network, meanwhile, is testing products designed to highlight its independence from search projects. "It's the case of a giant with a glaring Achilles' heel versus a smaller, more nimble player with a finely honed skill that can attack its competitor right where it hurts," McCarthy writes.
