Proposition 8 decision sparks celebrations

Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker issued a sweeping decision Wednesday that found California's Proposition 8 violates the U.S. Constitution's guarantees of equal protection and due process. The news set off celebrations in the LGBT community, but marriage-equality opponents say they'll appeal the case which is likely to eventually head to the U.S. Supreme Court, meaning it could be years before the issue is finally settled. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., said Walker's decision is a reminder that, "we live in a democracy wherein majority rule is checked and balanced by the guarantee of inalienable minority rights."
