DOMA ruling affects finances for same-sex couples

Gay clients who are married or considering same-sex marriage are now entitled to the same federal benefits as heterosexual couples, following the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that struck down the Defense of Marriage Act. Advisers who work with same-sex couples should pay particular attention to how the ruling may affect their clients' financial arrangements, many of which may not take into account newly acquired rights such as the ability to file federal taxes jointly and exemption from federal estate tax.
