Federal student loans defaulting despite assistance programs

About half of the $1 trillion in outstanding student-loan debt is not being repaid, an analysis by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau found. One in eight borrowers is in default. Many borrowers who are defaulting are not aware of federal programs available to assist with repayment, the CFPB said. Just 10% of borrowers are enrolled in repayment programs that are based on the individuals' financial situations.
