The much-touted machine-to-machine communications made possible by the developing Internet of Things may have wide implications for the power grid, writes Peter Kelly-Detwiler. Among other things, the sensors deployed in such networks can help power-generating turbines avoid costly breakdowns by detecting problems in the early stages of development so they can be addressed quickly.
