Oil-cleanup discovery mimics cactus spines

Tiny cones made of copper and a silicone polymer mimic the spiky spines of cactus plants to extract oil that has polluted water. The development by researchers in Beijing "provides a perfect example of first describing an interesting biological system and then taking it one step further by solving an engineering problem," said professor Joanna Aizenberg of Harvard University.
