A bipartisan group of 83 members of Congress has written to Secretary of State John Kerry urging the State Department to intervene to ensure the safety of LGBT athletes and spectators at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. "Russia's anti-LGBT laws defy basic human rights that should be guaranteed to everyone at all times and in all places," Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., said. Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., plans to introduce a resolution calling on Russia to guarantee that LGBT athletes and spectators at the games will not experience discrimination. In New York, a group of nine openly LGBT elected officials has written to President Barack Obama asking him to refuse diplomatic missions to Russia until the country halts its crackdown on the LGBT community.
