When Dan Akerson was tapped to run General Motors, he drew fire for not being a "car guy" -- but he said he's shown doubters that transferable leadership skills, not specific knowledge, are what really matters. "Fundamentally, no kidding, it's all about leadership. I don't think you have to be a subject-matter expert," he says. "Complex organizations have many common challenges."
