FDA seeing one of slowest years for new drug approvals in five years

The FDA cleared nine drugs by the end of June, putting it on track to authorize 18 "new molecular entities" -- treatments with active ingredients that are not found in other approved therapies -- this year. An agency spokeswoman said approvals in the second half of 2008 will depend on new-drug applications, which "come in on a rolling basis." Twenty-two such drugs were approved in 2006.
