Do graphic novels harm reading ability, creativity?

Despite some enthusiasm for using graphic novels in the classroom, language arts teacher Bill Ferriter writes in this blog post that he's concerned the books will limit the use of students' imaginations and deter them from reading more challenging texts. Ferriter said graphic novels do not force students to think about what the characters or settings look like, which could motivate them to avoid nonfiction or unillustrated books that would require more thought.
