Fla. homeowners rates should be decreasing, official says

Reported decreases in reinsurance prices mean that Florida homeowners should be seeing lower rates, state Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater wrote in a letter to Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty. "If insurance companies can justifiably raise rates on Florida families because the reinsurance market drives their costs up, they can certainly lower the costs for Florida families when reinsurance prices fall," Atwater wrote. The insurance commissioner's office is working on a response to Atwater's letter, said a spokeswoman for McCarty.
