Japanese policymakers divided over consumption-tax hike

Japan must decide whether to go ahead with a planned doubling of its consumption tax to 10%. Supporters say it is an essential step toward bringing down the huge public debt, which is expected to reach 230% of gross domestic product in 2014. Critics warn that it could slow economic growth, which is just now emerging from 15 years of stagnation.
