South Fla. ports to test direct imports of fruit from South America

Grape and blueberry shippers in Peru and Uruguay will start shipping their fruit directly to Port Everglades and PortMiami in Florida in October, under a pilot project aimed at getting fresh fruit to South Florida's consumers more quickly. Concerns about fruit flies and other pests led to a ban on direct shipments to South Florida decades ago, but the coalition spearheading the change says new technologies make it possible to avoid the problem.
