California bills fail to advance

Three California bills tantamount to a ban on plastic bags, plastic food service packaging and certain PVC packaging failed to advance past the Senate Appropriations Committee on Aug. 7. ACC worked with its Progressive Bag Affiliates to urge a "no" vote on the measure that sought to impose a 25-cent tax on each plastic grocery bag used at supermarkets and pharmacies. A PVC packaging ban based on false allegations of harm to human health failed to pass as well as a bill setting virtually impossible composting and recycling standards for takeout food packaging.
