Oil companies may eye Marathon in event of split

Marathon Oil's upstream business could become a target for domestic and foreign oil companies if it decides to separate its exploration and production, natural gas and Canadian oil-sands operations from its refining and marketing business as is currently being discussed. "We've been looking at Marathon as a possible consolidation candidate from a number of different angles, regardless of whether they split in two or not," said analyst Lysle Brinker of John S. Herold Inc.
