Lawmakers try to delay a drop in the conforming-loan limit

The largest size of home loans backed by the government-sponsored enterprises is scheduled to drop Oct. 1, but a group of lawmakers is trying to postpone that drop. The lawmakers, with support from housing and banking groups, face a couple of significant challenges in their efforts, however, as the Obama administration and House Republican leaders oppose the move.
