Study says extended use of preterm formula helps low-weight babies

Babies with a very low birth weight have a better metabolic profile if they are fed nutrient-enriched formula after leaving the hospital, researchers report in The Journal of Pediatrics. The study team from the University of Chile said babies given preterm formula for at least six months after discharge had lower total fat mass and lower fasting insulin levels than those who received it only while hospitalized.
