A piezoelectric vibration harvester could mean the structural health of tunnels can be assessed more easily. Developed in Germany, the harvester takes vibrations from trains in the tunnel and uses that to power wireless sensors. "Our system can be easily mounted to any tunnel, whether it is a new building or an old one," the researchers said. "[The] system is especially suited for refitting and upgrading older tunnels to improve security."
