Line's second-quarter revenue increase shows the value of free-app monetizing

Line is successfully monetizing its free messaging application, posting a $132 million gain in second-quarter revenue largely on the strength of ad support and in-app purchasing, Kaylene Hong writes. "LINE is not simply a messaging app -- it has expanded to let users buy virtual goods through games and messaging content like stickers, which are behind its money-making capabilities," Hong writes of the Japanese company, which posted $3 million revenue in the second quarter of 2012.
