Smart city lighting a first step toward smart grid

Paris is building toward a smart street lighting system that, over 10 years, is expected to reduce lighting energy consumption 30% and has potential to do far more, according to this article. Silver Spring Networks is working on the project, which utilizes light poles throughout the city that will also be employed to produce a smart grid network upon which developers can build apps.
