Airlines lowering luggage weights to counter fuel costs

To absorb increasing fuel costs, some U.S. airlines are issuing new regulations on international baggage. Continental lowered the per-bag luggage weight from 70 pounds to 50 pounds for coach passengers only beginning Sept. 7. Beginning Sept. 1, Northwest Airlines will lower its economy luggage weight from two bags at 70 pounds each to two bags at 50 pounds each.
