Smoothies boost McDonald's sales, spark competition

McDonald's saw its biggest sales jump in 18 months in July, largely driven by increased demand for cold drinks including its new fruit smoothies. The success of the smoothie launch didn't go unnoticed by competitor Jamba Juice, which followed up a recent tongue-in-cheek "cheeseburger smoothie" video with the real announcement that it will honor McDonald's smoothie coupons in select markets through Aug. 15.
