Analysis: Obstacles to primary care access drive up ED visits

A review of 10-year data from the National Health Interview Survey found an increase in emergency department visits due to growing obstacles to primary care access, a trend that is expected to continue when insurance coverage expands in 2014 under the Affordable Care Act. Health care officials should address the problem by giving incentives to encourage medical school graduates to pursue primary care and by increasing utilization of nurse practitioners and physician assistants, the study's lead author said.
