Silicon found to boost lithium ion battery capacity

Sheets of aligned carbon nanotubes coated with silicon may hold the key to more powerful lithium-ion batteries, according to this article. "We believe this carbon nanotube scaffolding potentially has the ability to change the industry, although technical aspects will have to be worked out," said Xiangwu Zhang, an associate professor at North Carolina State University. "The manufacturing process we’re using is scalable and could work well in commercial production." However, some technical problems still need to be worked out.
