A U.S. Department of Agriculture proposal to allow Mexican avocados to be shipped to all 50 states threatens the livelihoods of the California and Florida avocado industries, The Ledger argues. Florida growers, who say their avocados are lower in fat and calories than the Haas variety grown in California and Mexico, will position their product as an alternative to those regions' fruit.
