China invests in LNG projects to reduce coal dependence

China is engaged in a mammoth construction program of building liquefied natural gas terminals and natural gas pipelines. The work by China National Offshore Oil, as well as other Chinese oil and gas companies, is aimed at diversifying the nation's energy supply and cutting back its dependence on coal, analysts said. One project scheduled to begin operation in 2011 will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 130 million tons a year, said Wu Hong, an executive with China National Petroleum.
