FDA should use proactive strategies to ensure food safety

A new study conducted by an FDA food safety panel, the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine calls for expanded FDA authority over food recalls and more agency access to product information and testing data. The report also recommended proactive safety policies, including "delegating food facility inspections to the states" and standardizing "the intensity and frequency of these facility reviews" to improve the agency's oversight of foods.
