Federal group wants "meaningful choice" in patient control over data

An HHS privacy tiger team says health care groups have the choice between opt-in and opt-out approaches to obtaining patient consent for data access, provided that those using an opt-out method give patients a "meaningful choice" in making consent decisions. "Patients must have an opportunity to provide consent before any of the patient's data is made available to a third-party information organization," the team's co-chairman said.
