Bridgelux to cut costs, boost efficiency with silicon LEDs

Bridgelux, a manufacturer of light-emitting diode light sources, expects to reduce costs by 20% to 30% while increasing energy efficiency by making its LED chips on silicon wafers with a gallium nitride thin film, rather than employing sapphire or silicon carbide substrates. The company says the transition to silicon-based fabrication will take about two years.
