Insurers find social media is a powerful ally

The rise of social media has handed the insurance industry a powerful tool to weed out fraudulent claims, Dennis Jay writes. People with supposedly career-ending injuries often make ill-advised Facebook or Twitter posts discussing their continuing professional activities or simply gossiping about their bowling scores -- and that can be enough to prove that a claim is bogus, Jay writes. "Not since the first time someone picked up a video camera to document malingering by a workers' compensation claimant has technology given us such a powerful tool," he writes.
