SMS gets messaging competition from Facebook

Facebook released a standalone mobile-messaging application on Tuesday that lets Facebook users send messages directly to other users' phones, even if the receiver doesn't have the app installed. The launch is seen as a move against the SMS messaging standard favored by phone companies and against Apple's planned iMessage service. The near-ubiquity of Facebook as a platform will give it the muscle needed to challenge niche apps such as iMessage, MG Siegler writes.
