Benign heart tumor linked to death of young athlete

A 16-year-old Pennsylvania high school student died from complications associated with a benign heart tumor, according to the local medical examiner's office. The boy collapsed during football practice and was pronounced dead an hour later. Dr. Srinivas Murali, director of Allegheny General Hospital's Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, said the condition is rare and is not usually associated with sudden death. The tumor, known as an atrial myxoma, can be easily detected with an echocardiogram, but it may be asymptomatic.
