Leverage, declining assets sweet for REIT shorts

Short-sellers still have plenty of ripe targets in financial companies with declining assets, high leverage and short-term or callable debt, one such investor says. These companies can suffer dramatic declines because high leverage multiplies declines in asset values several times over. Investor Greg Weston says one example is Maguire Properties, a REIT that owns office properties in Southern California.
