Chinese brothels are typically tolerated by local officials -- but every so often, the central government steps in and makes an example of the owner. That should serve as a reminder to Western businessmen of the importance of staying within the law while attempting to please local officials, writes Shaun Rein. "Too many foreign companies fool themselves into believing they have to bend rules because that's how things are done in China," Rein notes. "They should never engage in illegal activity. The central government likes to make examples of foreign companies that break the law."
