In this article, Dan Throne, sales manager for Electric Drives and Controls, offers tips to mechanical engineers from an electrical-engineering perspective. He asks mechanical engineers to consider the electrical perspective during the mechatronic-design process to avoid building in inefficiencies and unnecessary complexity and offers a few tips: Directly couple the motor to the load, use electronic gearing and camming, and incorporate energy-efficient technology. "Every electromechanical system should perform its designed function with the minimal use of energy, motion and components required to get the job done," writes Throne.
