How to help students adjust to the elementary-school classroom

An instructional coach and former elementary-school teacher provides some tips for teachers new to the elementary-school classroom. In this article, Elena Aguilar recommends taking pictures of students on the first day of school and posting those photos on classroom walls the next day -- a project she says will help students feel welcome. She also suggests daily show and tell and asking students to give presentations on subjects they are knowledgeable about. It also is important to establish routines early on, she writes. Aguilar also provides tips for interesting lessons that will hold students' attention.
