Report: Hurricane Katrina was the worst U.S. natural disaster

Hurricane Katrina caused about 1,500 deaths and widespread property damage in Louisiana and other states along the Gulf Coast, making it the most destructive natural disaster in U.S. history, according to a report from PCI. "The ravages of Katrina resulted in insurance claims worth $41.1 billion (2005 dollars) that were paid to 1.7 million policyholders. ... Despite negative earnings immediately after the storm, the property casualty insurance industry has emerged from the Katrina experience on solid footing," the report said.
