Feeding babies unprocessed food may reduce risk of food allergies

A diet for infants that consists predominantly of unprocessed foods, including fruits, vegetables, poultry and fish, was linked to a lower risk of developing food allergies at age 2 compared with a diet of commercially produced foods, a U.K. study showed. Dietary nutrients educate the immune system, and inadequate amounts of them during a child's immune-system development may help explain the findings, said study author Kate Grimshaw. The study was published on the website of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
