Japan tops ¥1,000 trillion debt milestone

Japan's national debt has exceeded ¥1,000 trillion for the first time, including ¥830.5 trillion in government bonds. "Ballooning public debt underlines the need for [Prime Minister Shinzo] Abe to push for a sales-tax increase. This is a minimum policy requirement for his government," said economist Long Hanhua Wang at Royal Bank of Scotland Group in Tokyo.
