Analysis explores benefits of fully percutaneous TAVR over surgery

Fully percutaneous balloon-expandable transcatheter aortic valve replacement appears to yield shorter hospital stays compared with open surgery, data show. The analysis involved 331 patients who received Sapien or Sapien XT devices via transfemoral TAVR between 2007 and 2013 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. While a propensity-matched analysis found no difference in complications between the two approaches, there was a difference in the unadjusted analysis, and "a [fully percutaneous] approach seems to be preferable from both an economic and a patient comfort perspective," the authors wrote.
