New food regulations won't protect public from risks, USDA chief says

Implementing new rules in the wake of several meat recalls this year will not reduce risks to the U.S. food supply, said USDA Secretary Ed Schafer. He opposed a proposed mandatory recall of tainted products, saying the agency can do a "faster, better job" without it.
